Introduction to becoming a Digital Nomad
Becoming a digital nomad is an increasingly popular lifestyle choice for people who want to work remotely while traveling the world. As a digital nomad, you have the freedom to work from anywhere with an internet connection, whether that's a beach in Thailand, a coffee shop in Paris or overlooking the Okavango Delta on a safari.
Work & Employment
One of the first steps to becoming a digital nomad is to find a source of income whilst you travel (Even better if you can start, before leaving home). For this you will need to put together a list of your skills (CV's are not just for corporate jobs, they are also required to get work as a nomad), create a work portfolio that showcases your skills and experiences (nothing wrong with showcasing work done whilst working in a corporate environment).
This will help you attract clients or employers who are looking for the right fit and open to hiring remote workers.

Becoming a digital nomad, is not a get rich quick scheme.
Becoming a digital nomad, is not a get rich quick scheme. You'll need to have skills that are in demand (generally in the online marketplace, such as writing, programming, web design, social media management, or digital marketing), so make sure to polish up on skills, or take courses to get you to a level that will make you an evident choice. We’ve realised and observed that the more you invest in your skills, the more likely you are to get a gig, or get paid more for a gig.
We see so often people wanting to become a digital nomad and asking what work they can do. Well, this goes back to the previous paragraph.
Do not think for one second that you can just wing-it, rock up somewhere and expect people to be at your feet begging you to work for them.
This is also not a backpacker culture where you can do odd bar jobs here and there, to get by (nothing wrong with this, but we don’t consider this to be part of what a digital nomad is). In order to bring value to this community, we will also be posting opportunities in the dedicated section. Please make sure you always read fully the job descriptions, because that is the first starting point in making a good impression. Do not forget that usually, you are not the only person applying for the job, so if you just write “I’m interested” that will definitely put you at the bottom of their choice. You need to sell yourself and your skills, right from the start. This is not a place for lazy people if you want to be successful. Like everything in life, you only get one shot, don’t waste it. If you really put in some serious effort, you will always find people willing to help or give you an opportunity. Nobody will feel sorry for you or help you, if you just wait for things to happen. The world does not owe you anything.
When making a choice of where to travel to as a DN, you'll also need to take into consideration, the infrastructure available, such as having a reliable internet connection (yeah, you’re not on holiday, you’re supposed to work and deliver your professional commitments to your paying clients), a laptop or tablet, and always take some back-up, just in case (we have a list of things that we highly recommend to have as a DN).Make sure you give enough preparation and thought to have the ability to manage your time and workload effectively. It is critical to note that becoming a digital nomad or even being a seasoned digital nomad does not mean all stress and hard work is removed. It is important to note that it is like everything in life, it comes with its perks and its challenges. What may seem to be a pure dream with feet in the sand or sitting on a mountain summit, is only a part of the journey.
Our own journey was filled with challenges that we did not have prior to becoming digital nomads, the good things that we took for granted, became a challenge when we became nomads.
However, as with all things, if you stick to your dream it ends up working well in your favour. We'll try and break this down into different important areas to take into consideration before and when one becomes a digital nomad.
Work & Employment
An important step is to build a network. Often people think that the best is to network and hang out with other digital nomads or remote workers, which is great to a certain extent, but this can become a very lonely path. The likelihood that you actually all travel to the same places at the same time are very slim. In our experience, we would go down the route of networking with the actual locals, people who know the area. The bonus of this strategy or thought process is that, should you fall in love with the place, well, every time you come back, you’ll bump into familiar faces, and continue building on meaningful relationships. Who knows, you may even buy a house there etc, so immersing with the locals is the best option.Hanging out with digital nomads is great too, but very difficult to actually have time to build relationships, due to the nature of nomadic travel. Also, never neglect the idea that you could potentially find some cool work gigs locally, which you can then continue doing even if you have moved to the next location. Try attending local events which are a great way to connect and network differently. This leads us to our next topic:
Choice of Destination & Travel Cadence
This one is a touchy subject because everyone is different. However, despite this, we have tried the different options, and have observed other DNs handling this differently. Anecdotes galore.First point which we think is key to being zen: Cadence of travel. This is, how often you move from one place to the next. Whilst the desire for many is to see it all as quickly as possible, maybe for bragging rights to number of countries visited etc… We doubt this is sustainable or viable for a true digital nomad. Changing locations every week is stressful and affects your productivity, as well as having a negative impact on your budget and lifestyle. Nobody likes to be rushed, or to be in a hurry. So don’t do it, it’s basic Maths. Every 2 weeks is more reasonable, but still not ideal financially or for organisational purposes. For having tried several formulas within a same country, within a region or cross continent, the best cadence is minimum 1 month in any given place, 3 months is the sweet spot (moving in January, April, July and October) and (December to go home and see friends and family), 6 months and above is great, but you don’t get to travel or see as much. This is by no means the only way to do it, and each person may find a different tune works for them, however, we’ve noticed that those who have caught onto the 3 month cadence, are zen and have got a “well-oiled system”. After all, this is a guide, not a rule book. Then, choice of destination, this one is not easy to crack, but there are a few things to take into consideration. Language barriers are real, safety is important, access to decent infrastructure (medical, electricity, water, internet, transport etc). Everyone has their own definitions and thresholds of risk. The choice of destination can also be determined by if you are traveling alone, or with a spouse or a life partner/girlfriend/boyfriend (these things matter in certain cultures, so do not overlook these things, and always remember that you are a guest in the destination country, so your thoughts and principles etc are not to be imposed… basics of diplomacy). We’ve experienced the EMEA region quite extensively (and still do), so if you have any questions, concerns or need help, please do send us a message. We speak English, French and Dutch fluently.
Planning Your Travels
This is all about being organised and planning ahead. The more planning and thought you put into this, the more relaxed you will be, without forgetting the impact it has on the general cost of nomading.Choosing your destinations for the next year, is the ideal scenario. Make your choices correspond to intelligent planning. When searching for flights and train tickets, make sure you know the dates of public holidays in your destination countries, because these can affect the price to travel there, so ideal is to get there just before or just after the local peaks. Use Google search for flights, as this will always scrape the internet to get all available flight booking websites and their best prices.
Packing: If you’re going to be traveling for more than 1 month, travel “light”: 1 suitcase, 1 carry on and 1 laptop/backpack bag. You do not need more.
Invest in strong, quality bags, or else you’ll end up buying a new bag every 6 months, which in the long run, adds up quite a lot. Make sure those wheels can handle weight and lots of km of dragging around… Nothing worse than a bag with wheels that want to go in their own direction (much like a shitty shopping caddy - good for the workout, bad for the moral).
Accommodation
This is always your biggest expense and is the trickiest to deal with. Airbnb is usually the go-to by default, and offers many advantages, however, it’s not ideal if you’re looking to rent mid-term (minimum 1 month, maximum 6 months). If you don’t find a destination in our portfolio, but need assistance in planning an itinerary, reach out, we would be happy to assist. We will be referencing boutique property groups around the world, that have premium real estate portfolios ideal for Digital Nomads mid-term rentals. We will ensure that all listings meet premium standards of cleanliness and comfort, with decent Wi-Fi, and back-ups in case of infrastructural shutdowns (which happens frequently in developing countries). If you own property which you wish to list and rent out to fellow Nomads who travel to your home whilst you are nomading, please do not hesitate to get in touch and we will list your property and market it.
Important Practicalities
It's also important to consider the practicalities of living as a digital nomad, such as visa requirements, healthcare, banking and insurance.
You may need to research the laws and regulations of the countries you plan to visit and ensure that you have adequate coverage for any unforeseen circumstances. We will be listing relevant contact details and recommendations to these practical services, as the community grows and we experience different countries and continents.
Conclusion
It's also important to consider the practicalities of living as a digital nomad, such as visa requirements, healthcare, banking and insurance.
Ultimately, becoming a digital nomad can be a rewarding and fulfilling way to live and work, but it requires careful planning, preparation, and a willingness to adapt to new situations and challenges. About
Gungano was born from the founders' personal frustrations as digital nomads, with the lack of mid-term rental accommodation to cater for entrepreneurs and executives.
The Problem
We are digital nomads, and have always struggled to find a place to go, a place to stay where to eat and where to work. The "where to stay" mid-term being the hardest. Airbnb is overpriced and so are many of the other platforms... Especially in the regions we're interested in: Europe, Africa, The USA & LatAm. For couples it's even harder. The demand for Digital Nomad services and real estate is increasing daily. We hope to contribute to providing accommodation options to the declared 35M Digital Nomads around the world. The demand outweighs the supply.
